HS&E Test for Specialists (SPEC)

The CITB Health, safety and environment test helps raise standards across the industry. It ensures that workers meet a minimum level of health, safety and environmental awareness before going on site.

The test structure has been designed to enable you to demonstrate knowledge across the following key areas.

  • Legal and management
  • Health and Welfare
  • General Safety
  • High risk activities
  • Environment
  • Specialist Activities

The Specialist test last for 45 minutes and has 50 questions. The test is made up of behavioural case studies and knowledge questions. The knowledge questions are based on 5 core sections and relevant specialist knowledge questions from one of the following activities:

  • Supervisory (SUP)
  • Demolition (DEM)
  • Plumbing or gas (PLUM)
  • Highway works (HIW)
  • Specialist work at height (WAH)
  • Lifts and escalators (LAEE)
  • Tunnelling (TUNN)
  • HVACR - Heating and plumbing services (HAPS)
  • HVACR - Pipefitting and welding (PFW)
  • HVACR - Ductwork (DUCT)
  • HVACR - Refrigeration and air conditioning (RAAC)
  • HVACR - Services and facilities maintenance (SAF)

Please note: From January 2018 the test will be updated to include new question styles.
